A Decades-long Journey to Safety and Belonging: The Incredible Story of Ahmad

Excerpts of an inspiring interview with an Afghan refugee in Denmark, published on my Medium account.

Thirteen years ago, Ahmad Zaman arrived in Denmark for the first time. He was not unfamiliar with the urgency to find refuge in a safer place, though. At first glance, his story seems to center solely around poverty in a foreign country, a displaced childhood, and constant struggle — but as you dive deeper into it, you realize it is much more about the person he has become today than his past. Meet Ahmad, one of the 12% Who Chose Denmark.

“The one thing I feel throughout this [integration] process, is that I constantly have to prove that I am worthy of being in this society, and that is a very tiring aspect because you constantly have to work hard to tell people: I am good, I am very good… I think even though I have done a lot, I still do not feel settled. I do not feel like I am okay, that this is enough now, I can relax, I am part of the society”.
